LSD (Excerpt from Wikipedia)
'Widely different effects emerge based on what has been called set and setting; the "set" being the general mindset of the user, and the "setting" being the physical and social environment in which the drug's effects are experienced.

Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert considered the chemical to be of potentially beneficial application in psychotherapy. If the user is in a hostile or otherwise unsettling environment, or is not mentally prepared for the powerful distortions in perception and thought that the drug causes, effects are more likely to be unpleasant than if he or she is in a comfortable environment and has a relaxed, balanced and open mindset.

Some psychological effects may include an experience of radiant colors, objects and surfaces appearing to ripple or "breathe," colored patterns behind the eyes, a sense of time distorting (time seems to be stretching, repeating itself, changing speed or stopping), crawling geometric patterns overlaying walls and other objects, morphing objects, a sense that one's thoughts are spiraling into themselves, loss of a sense of identity or the ego (known as "ego death"), and powerful, and sometimes brutal, psycho-physical reactions interpreted by some users as reliving their own birth.

Many users experience a dissolution between themselves and the "outside world".[36] This unitive quality may play a role in the spiritual and religious aspects of LSD. The drug sometimes leads to disintegration or restructuring of the user's historical personality and creates a mental state that some users report allows them to have more choice regarding the nature of their own personality.'

...I've posted this because I agree with it. I don't like to claim to have taken drugs but I feel I need to say that I feel very fortunate to have had the experiences I have had with LSD. I had some good ones and a bad one. The bad one was the last and I will never do it again. I feel fortunate to have experienced it before I did Vipassana because I believe that some of the positive experiences that can be experienced by LSD can also be experienced through the practice of Vipassana. I'm not talking about hallucinations or anything artificial. The following can be said about Vipassana as well as LSD:

- [May cause] significant changes in [one's] personality and life perspective. Widely different effects emerge based on what has been called set and setting; the "set" being the general mindset of the meditator/student and the "setting" being the physical and social environment in which the practice's effects are experienced.

- Some psychological effects may include... loss of a sense of identity or the ego (known as "ego death")

- [Vipassana may lead] to disintegration or restructuring of the meditator's historical personality and creates a mental state that some students report allows them to have more choice regarding the nature of their own personality.

Thanks for reading this. I hope I didn't demean the spirit of Vipassana by comparing it to LSD.

Vipassana
I recently received Vipassana. I felt so much lighter when I finished my first ten day course. It's now 14 days since. I haven't been able to meditate in the normal sense but I have stopped listening to the radio in my car which I find is some help. Perhaps when we move off a main road (I'm not being metaphorical), I'll find it easier to do at home.

Everyone's experience of Vipassana is different. It's best not to know too much about it before you go because everyone gets something different and you can't go in there thinking you're going to have the same experience as your friend and spend the whole time wondering when it's going to happen.

I biggest enemy was drowiness. I spent the first 8 of ten days daydreaming just to entertain myself enough to at least stay sitting up. :L These are just things I have to deal with. I hope I will be better next time around.

Vipassana is a meditation technique discovered by the Buddha, Gottama, bit it's a not-religious technique. See www.dhamma.org

Your accent was always annoying. A market stall was always the job you were meant for. I remember we talked about you doing exactly that in georges street arcade years ago. Do you scribe names on the grains of rice.?

I'm still in DCU, just finishing up my PhD. 7 years there, and I'll be there for one more year doing lectures for a guy on sabbatical.

Thats cool about your folks going over. They're not staying with you are they? you'd drive each other mad. Rowan invited me to his(your) gaff on Friday. Now I know why...its a free gaff! It think his birthday is on Wednesday so he's celebrating then

Usually I am taking this piss, but sadly I have a soft spot for The Creation. Ever heard Save My Soul by Wimple Witch? I dunno why, but I like some of that 60s garage stuff.

Well I think it's pretty catchy. It's garage, so it's not supposed to be wanky, chin stroking "good" music. It's supoosed to be direct and have attitude, like punk except not as crap. But for your benefit I'll change back to Aquarian Age (and await a similar critique).

Tis Mr. Logan (or should I say, Mr. Sherrard, star of Eurovision and the McDonalds ads over here! I guess you told me because you want to confess that you're his love child? Which would be odd, because I thought he was gay.

I just thought of something...wasn't it your birthday last month? If so...oops, I forgot it again. I had it on my old phone, which I've lost a long time ago (I'm not good with phones). So here's some delayed birthday "Bebo Luv" for you!

You are right, Miley Cyrus is the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus. I can't believe someone allowed him to have kids!

Hey Jules, how's life down under... and in Australia?!!! You still there?

Listen, I've a mate, a nice lil' pretty lady actually, who wants to go there for a few months in the summer and I was hopin' you could offer some advice on where to go exactly to first get settled before exploring and things to watch out for. Might be goin' with her myself, and I'd love to see the place. (Where on this globe is it anyway? - Don't tell anyone I asked!) So throw some advice at Tiny H and send me a hi too. Hope you're keeping well anyway. :)

It was more of a rhetorical question... I was cooking dinner for CiarĂ¡n and I last night and mis-timed the rice with the chicken. Disaster.

No problemo. Looks like I'll include everyone that didn't go to college with me...even the kitchen sink.

...hmm, I wonder if the kitchen sink has a Bebo page...

That's right I'm part of the never ending thrill ride that is the courier industry. Tell your boyfreind if he wants to go nuts and shoot up the place like most postal workers I can hook him up with some sweet hardware.

It was pretty good. It wasn't fantastic, but it was a LOT better than the series now. Probably have to watch it again to refresh my memory on some of the jokes in it. But I still think they should have released a film years ago.
